Youthful Divide Erupts in Massachusetts Senate Race as Ed Markey's Age Emerges as a Key Issue

The upcoming U.S. Senate primary in Massachusetts has sparked a contentious debate over the age and suitability of incumbent Senator Ed Markey, who is facing a challenge from Representative Seth Moulton. The central issue of whether Markey, 80, is too old for another term has become a focal point of the campaign, particularly among younger voters.

During a recent debate, Markey's response to a question about his use of AI platforms like Claude or ChatGPT highlighted his perceived lack of familiarity with cutting-edge technology. He replied that he uses "whatever is inside of my iPhone or my iPad — whatever comes up" and admitted that he doesn't know "what companies my iPad may be using." This answer resonated with some young voters, like 18-year-old Arsen Bagdassarian, who supports Moulton. Bagdassarian, an incoming freshman at Boston's Northeastern University, believes that the country needs leaders who understand and can regulate artificial intelligence.

However, not all young voters agree. Many of Markey's younger supporters argue that his longevity in politics is an asset. They point to his long-standing record and believe that his experience is crucial in understanding and governing complex issues. Milan van Dam, a 17-year-old national chair of the High School Democrats of America, emphasizes that generational leadership is less about age and more about consistency and dedication to certain principles.

The divide among young Democrats in Massachusetts is evident in the endorsements they have received. Markey has garnered support from the High School Democrats of America, the College Democrats of America, and prominent progressives like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Meanwhile, Moulton has attracted a younger following, with his relative youth seen as a refreshing change from the seasoned incumbent.

Despite Moulton's campaign highlighting Markey's age as a reason for his unfitness for another term, some young Markey supporters argue that Moulton's youth does not necessarily equate to younger ideas. Matt Kelly, president of the UMass Lowell College Democrats, acknowledges that Markey's answer about AI was not ideal but believes that his understanding of governance is more important than his knowledge of technology. "Just because he has a younger face doesn't mean that he has younger ideas," Kelly said.

The debate over Markey's age and suitability for another term is a microcosm of a larger conversation about the role of experience in politics. As the primary approaches, it remains to be seen how this issue will influence the outcome of the race and the direction of Massachusetts politics.
