Stafford Arsonist Sentenced to Nearly 12 Years After Setting Woman on Fire in Tower Block Attack

A 33-year-old man who carried out a horrific assault by covering a woman in petrol and vodka before setting her on fire inside a residential tower block has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. Reece Brivitt committed the life-threatening attack within a flat in Stafford, prompting an immediate emergency response and leaving the victim with catastrophic, permanent injuries that will impact her for the rest of her life.

The sentencing hearing took place on Wednesday at Stafford Crown Court, where judicial authorities delivered a custodial sentence of 11 years and nine months to Brivitt. The substantial prison term was handed down following Brivitt’s admission of guilt in connection with the harrowing attack, reflecting the severity of the violence and the extreme danger posed to both the victim and the wider public.

Prior to his sentencing, Brivitt officially entered guilty pleas to two distinct criminal charges brought against him by prosecutors. He admitted to committing arson with intent to endanger life, a charge that acknowledged the grave risk his actions created for the entire residential building, as well as an additional count of wounding with intent in relation to the severe harm inflicted directly upon the woman.

In addition to sending Brivitt to prison for nearly a dozen years, the court took further measures to safeguard the survivor from future harm. The judge imposed an indefinite restraining order against Brivitt, which legally prohibits him from making any direct or indirect contact with the victim, establishing a permanent protective boundary following the traumatic incident.

The court proceedings detailed the events of the assault, which occurred on 22 October inside an apartment located on Milton Grove in Stafford. The property was situated within a multi-storey tower block complex, a setting that drastically elevated the potential consequences of igniting a blaze due to the concentration of multiple households living under the same shared roof.

During the incident, Brivitt used an accelerant mixture consisting of petrol and vodka, dousing the woman before deliberately igniting the flammable substances. The sudden fire rapidly engulfed the immediate area inside the flat, placing the woman in direct mortal peril and creating severe structural and safety hazards within the high-rise residential building.

As a direct consequence of being set on fire, the victim suffered extensive and severe burns across her chest and legs. Emergency medical care was required to treat her profound physical injuries, and the court heard that the trauma has left her with permanent, life-changing physical impairments as a result of the extensive tissue damage caused by the flames.

The prosecution and emergency responders emphasized that the deliberate ignition of volatile accelerants within an enclosed apartment carried disastrous implications not only for the target of the attack, but also for dozens of other people living in surrounding units throughout the tower block, who were placed in severe danger of smoke inhalation and entrapment.

Following the conclusion of the sentencing at Stafford Crown Court, Detective Constable Jessica Scott of Staffordshire Police provided an official response on behalf of the investigating team. She condemned the extreme nature of the violence, describing the event as a cruel and premeditated assault that fundamentally disrupted and damaged the survivor’s life.

Detective Constable Scott stressed the profound impact of the crime, reiterating that the arsonist had subjected the victim to an unforgiving attack that inflicted lasting physical injuries and enduring trauma. The detective underscored how the woman’s life has been permanently altered by the severe burns and the violent circumstances surrounding the incident.

Addressing the broader community aspect, Detective Constable Scott highlighted that the danger was far from confined to the individual flat. She pointed out that the incident posed a direct and critical threat to the life of every person who happened to be present in the multi-occupancy flats at the moment the fire was ignited.

The police investigator also paid tribute to the prompt and effective intervention of attending emergency services. DC Scott noted that the swift actions undertaken by attending firefighters ensured the blaze was brought under control and extinguished without delay, an intervention that crucially prevented further injuries and stopped the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.

The hazardous nature of the incident was similarly highlighted by senior fire officials involved in managing the response. Delivery Group Manager Mark Walchester, speaking on behalf of the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, explained how specialized crews acted rapidly upon arriving at the Milton Grove tower block to mitigate the acute risks confronting residents inside the building.

Walchester detailed the emergency procedures implemented during the call-out, noting that firefighting teams worked with great speed to suppress the flames and secure the environment. The primary operational objectives were to minimise the immediate danger facing the building's occupants and ensure the fire was fully extinguished as fast as possible before it could escalate.

In his concluding remarks, the fire service delivery group manager emphasized the inherent dangers associated with blazes in high-density residential structures. Walchester issued a stark reminder that fires breaking out in flat blocks and houses of multiple occupancy carry an immense potential to devastate human lives, given how quickly smoke, toxic fumes, and flames can spread through communal corridors and shared living spaces.
