A mother-of-four who issued a heartfelt plea on social media after exhausting all conventional options for an organ match has undergone a successful kidney transplant, thanks to the selflessness of a stranger who answered her call.
Karen Davey, 41, from Brynna in Rhondda Cynon Taf, was facing advanced stage three kidney failure and had reached a critical juncture in her health journey. Having discovered that none of her close friends or family members were viable biological matches, she turned to Facebook in a bid to secure a living donor and avoid leaving her family behind.
Her post caught the attention of Gary Summerfield, a 60-year-old security guard residing in Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent. Despite having never crossed paths with Karen previously, Gary was deeply moved by her online appeal and immediately volunteered to undergo screening to determine if he could provide the organ she urgently required.
This operation represents the second major lifesaving intervention for Karen, whose complex medical history began a decade earlier. At the age of 31, she suffered a sudden heart attack while attending her son’s football match, an emergency that necessitated a full heart transplant.
While the heart procedure granted her a vital second chance at life, the long-term post-operative regimen created severe secondary complications. The immunosuppressive medication required to prevent organ rejection placed immense strain on her renal system, an unavoidable side effect that healthcare providers had cautioned would eventually compromise her kidney function.
Karen acknowledged that living with the awareness of impending kidney deterioration had taken a significant mental and emotional toll over the years. When her condition progressively worsened to stage three failure, the search for a donor became an immediate priority, further complicated by her relatively rare blood type.
With her eldest child now 22, a 17-year-old son, Brandon, and a one-year-old grandchild, Karen was determined to be present for her loved ones. She reflected that her children had already navigated the trauma of her initial heart transplant a decade prior, making this subsequent organ failure another major hurdle for the entire household to confront.
When Gary encountered Karen’s post by chance, he found himself reflecting on his own family dynamics. Noting that Karen was of a similar age to his daughter and that her youngest child shared an age bracket with his grandson, he felt an overwhelming moral responsibility to step forward and offer assistance.
Gary explained that had his own daughter been in such a desperate situation without any compatible matches among relatives, he would have desperately hoped for a benevolent stranger to intervene. Operating under the conviction that she needed one of his kidneys far more than he required two, he decided it would be selfish to ignore her situation.
Before the transplant could proceed, Gary underwent an exhaustive series of medical and psychological assessments to confirm his suitability as an organ donor. These evaluations encompassed in-depth compatibility screenings, comprehensive blood panels, cholesterol tests, general health examinations, and psychological readiness reviews.
Once clearance was granted, both patients were admitted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where surgical teams performed the six-hour transplant procedure on 15 July.
The successful operation significantly shortened what could have been a protracted and perilous waiting period. Data from NHS Blood and Transplant indicates that patients waiting for a deceased donor kidney in the UK typically face an average delay of two to three years, whereas securing a compatible living donor can reduce that timeline to approximately three to six months.
Following the operation, Karen reported a dramatic improvement in her physical well-being, stating that she felt a hundred times better. She expressed profound admiration for Gary’s willingness to subject his body to extensive medical testing and major surgery simply to save the life of someone he had never met.
Karen’s husband, Matthew, voiced immense appreciation on behalf of the entire family, emphasizing that Gary’s actions provided a powerful reminder of human kindness amid everyday hardships. He noted that the family could never fully repay the debt of gratitude owed to the donor for granting Karen the opportunity to continue raising her children.
For Gary, the experience of meeting Karen following their recoveries confirmed that his decision was the right one. Seeing her restored to good health, he stated that donating his kidney ranks alongside getting married and the birth of his children as one of the three most meaningful milestones of his life.
