Reform UK Lawmaker Sarah Pochin Discloses Family Pleas to Step Down Amid Heightened Security Measures

A prominent member of Parliament from Reform UK has revealed that her children have urgently implored her to abandon her political career due to escalating worries regarding her personal safety. Sarah Pochin, who represents the constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, spoke candidly about the emotional toll her role is taking on her immediate family.

The parliamentarian explained that her two adult sons, aged 25 and 27, become visibly distressed whenever the issue of personal protection is raised during their family visits. According to Pochin, both sons have pleaded with her to step away from public office, warning that serving in frontline politics can never justify placing her life in jeopardy.

These familial anxieties come at a time when security protocols for the party have been dramatically intensified. Pochin confirmed that all eight Reform UK members of Parliament have now been placed under constant, 24-hour protection to guard against potential threats.

The decisive increase in security measures follows the tragic killing of Ann Widdecombe in July. Widdecombe, a former Conservative government minister who had transitioned to serving as the immigration and justice spokeswoman for Reform UK, was murdered at her own residence, sending shockwaves through the political landscape.

Reflecting on the ongoing situation, Pochin expressed deep gratitude toward the personnel tasked with protecting elected officials. However, she emphasized that maintaining such an extensive security apparatus inevitably inflicts severe disruption on the private lives of politicians and their families.

She highlighted how pervasive this security presence has become by recounting a recent vacation to North Wales with her husband. Even during a casual walk with their dogs along a coastal pathway, the couple was accompanied by two security operatives, with her husband nervously holding her hand throughout the outing.

The daily realities of this security footprint have fundamentally altered her everyday routine. Pochin noted that standard activities have become impossible under the heightened threat environment, preventing her from independently shopping for clothing, purchasing cosmetics, or even carrying out routine grocery visits to Sainsbury's. Despite these heavy restrictions, she maintained that she refuses to be intimidated or silenced.

Security concerns within Reform UK have been a recurring issue at the highest levels of party leadership. Earlier in the year, party leader Nigel Farage publicly voiced frustration over prior reductions in his protective detail, leading him to hold formal discussions with the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, the official body overseeing security arrangements for high-profile public figures.

Farage had previously asserted that an unsettling incident that took place at his London residence in 2025 was directly linked to the subsequent killing of Widdecombe, underscoring the severe climate of apprehension surrounding the party's representatives.

Pochin’s path to the House of Commons began when she secured victory in a 2025 by-election in Runcorn and Helsby. That election victory established her as the very first woman to serve as a Reform UK Member of Parliament.

Before entering the national political arena, Pochin built a diverse career outside of Westminster. Her professional background includes employment with the energy corporation Shell, service as a magistrate and justice of the peace, and extensive work in local government as a Conservative councillor and mayor of Cheshire East.

Drawing upon that varied professional history, Pochin offered a critical assessment of the parliamentary environment itself, describing Westminster as the most chauvinistic workplace she has ever experienced. She noted that the prevailing atmosphere in Parliament took her by complete surprise compared to her past careers in business and the judiciary.

To illustrate the everyday culture in the corridors of power, Pochin described encounters where male colleagues dropped doors directly in her face, pointing to a persistent undercurrent of disrespect toward female parliamentarians.

Her position as the sole female Reform UK MP shifted earlier this year when former Conservative minister Suella Braverman made the decision to defect from the Tories and join Reform UK in January, expanding the party's female representation in the Commons.

Pochin concluded by stressing that the entrenched chauvinism within the political system can only be challenged and overcome by having strong female figures actively participating in governance. She directed a public appeal to women across the country, encouraging them to stand alongside her, Braverman, and other female politicians to establish a decisive and unyielding presence within Parliament.
