Military aircraft operating under NATO command were scrambled into Polish airspace overnight following a widespread wave of Russian drone attacks that targeted multiple regions across Ukraine, including areas situated near the alliance's eastern flank. The rapid deployment reflects heightened security concerns among neighboring European nations as aerial strikes intensify near international borders.
The Armed Forces Operational Command in Warsaw announced via official public statements that it ordered a short-term elevation in the operational readiness of selected defense forces and aerial assets. The swift precautionary posture was triggered immediately after tracking systems identified Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles striking locations across western Ukraine during the overnight hours.
Polish military authorities emphasized that the activation of combat aircraft was entirely preventive in nature, specifically designed to guarantee the sovereignty and security of Polish airspace. Defense officials highlighted that protection was particularly focused on border regions directly adjacent to Ukrainian territory struck by the incoming Russian aerial barrage.
According to updates issued by the operational command, the broader defense apparatus maintained a state of elevated vigilance throughout the engagement. Alongside military aviation patrolling the skies, ground-based air defense batteries and radar reconnaissance networks remained fully active to monitor potential emerging threats before the specialized aerial operations were officially concluded after roughly two hours.
The cross-border alert coincided with one of the most technologically diverse drone assaults launched by Moscow in recent months. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russian forces launched a total of 149 unmanned craft overnight, utilizing a combination of lethal Shahed strike platforms—approximately half of which featured high-speed jet propulsion—alongside Gerbera and Parody decoy drones intended to confuse radar systems.
Ukrainian air defense units managed to successfully intercept and neutralize 128 of the 149 incoming drones. Despite the high interception rate, defense officials reported that surviving munitions and falling debris caused physical impacts and damage across at least 13 distinct geographical locations throughout the country.
Significant civilian casualties and severe destruction were recorded in northeastern Ukraine. In the city of Sumy, local officials reported that a Russian drone strike directly hit a shopping mall, killing at least two people and injuring 23 others as emergency rescue teams mobilized to clear rubble and assist survivors.
The Ukrainian capital was also targeted during the overnight offensive, causing disruption across several neighborhoods. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least three individuals sustained injuries when a drone struck a gas station located in the capital's Holosiivskyi district, while Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported additional impacts on a local residential building.
Further south and east, civilian infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk region was subjected to heavy bombardment. State emergency personnel confirmed that multiple strikes in the province left at least eight individuals injured, compounding the strain on regional medical and rescue services responding to the attacks.
From Moscow, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged conducting broad offensive operations, stating that its forces had targeted military and logistical infrastructure in the southern city of Mykolaiv and the southwestern port hub of Chornomorsk. Russian defense officials also asserted that their strikes targeted two commercial dry cargo vessels that were actively navigating toward the Black Sea port of Odesa.
Simultaneously, Russian territory faced an extensive reciprocal aerial offensive. The Defense Ministry in Moscow claimed that its air defense formations intercepted at least 448 Ukrainian drones overnight, reporting downing operations spanning 13 different Russian administrative regions, as well as over occupied Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea.
The scale of the incoming drone wave prompted severe disruptions across Russia's civil aviation network. Rosaviatsiya, the federal air transport agency, enacted emergency flight groundings and operational restrictions at multiple regional airports, including facilities in Sochi, Tambov, Penza, Saratov, Volgograd, Krasnodar, Grozny, Vladikavkaz, and Makhachkala.
Air transit around the Russian capital was also severely curtailed as safety protocols were enacted. Rosaviatsiya confirmed temporary operational limits and grounded flights at two of Moscow's major international transport hubs, Vnukovo and Domodedovo, while security forces worked to secure the airspace above the metropolitan area.
Addressing the reciprocal long-range operations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv's forces had executed precision strikes against eight major Russian infrastructure sites supporting Moscow's military efforts over the preceding 24-hour period. Among the confirmed targets were an oil refinery located in the distant Yamalo-Nenets region and a strategic maritime trading port situated in Dagestan.
Zelenskyy indicated that Ukrainian counterstrikes also hit vital logistical and war-supporting targets within Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan, and Bryansk. Commenting on the ongoing long-range exchanges, the Ukrainian president underscored that Ukraine would continue to deliver a direct and just response to the daily bombardment directed against its cities and sovereign territory.
