A maritime tragedy in Indonesia's Java Sea has left search and rescue teams scouring rough waters for survivors after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 suddenly overturned, resulting in at least six confirmed fatalities and leaving 129 people missing as of Tuesday out of the 234 individuals on board.
Among those who survived the disaster is Rizky Apriansyah, an onboard waiter who had been employed on the vessel for only three months. In a harrowing personal account, he described how the ship was overwhelmed by towering waves and fully capsized in less than ten minutes, forcing him into a desperate struggle for survival in the open sea.
The catastrophe unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning while the ferry was navigating its routine route. Rizky was asleep in his quarters on the ship's top deck when his friends abruptly awakened him at around 1:00 a.m., urgently warning him to put on a life jacket as disaster loomed.
Upon waking, Rizky discovered that the ship was already in severe distress, listing heavily to its left side at an angle of approximately 30 degrees. The steep incline made moving inside the quarters exceptionally difficult and immediately signaled that the vessel was on the verge of losing its stability entirely.
According to Rizky, the ferry was being relentlessly battered by massive swells measuring between three and four meters in height. Each successive impact from the powerful waves pushed the vessel further onto its side, accelerating the vessel's dangerous tilt and throwing the occupants into total panic.
A significant point of concern raised by the survivor was the apparent absence of any general emergency warning system during the crisis. Rizky noted that no alarm had sounded to alert travelers, which made him deeply fearful that sleeping passengers located elsewhere on the ferry were completely unaware of the rapidly unfolding danger.
Addressing questions regarding the emergency protocols, the ferry's operating company, Virgo Karya Shipping, indicated to local media that it could not immediately provide an explanation regarding the lack of an alarm, stating that management needed to consult with the crew members who were on duty at the time of the incident.
When Rizky and four companions managed to scramble out of their room, the vessel's severe tilt caused him to fall directly against the ship's exterior railing. In a moment of sheer terror, the group held on to each other tightly before an immense wave broke over the deck and swept them directly into the dark sea.
Adrift in the turbulent water roughly 15 meters away from the dying vessel, Rizky and his friends managed to find an unexpected lifeline. They clung together to a floating 12-kilogram cooking gas cylinder that had been washed clear of the ship, using the buoyant canister to keep their heads above the surface.
From their precarious vantage point in the water, the survivors watched in disbelief as the entire vessel rolled over. Rizky recounted that the entire sequence occurred with terrifying speed, taking less than ten minutes from the initial escalation for the ferry to completely capsize in the Java Sea.
The group was forced to endure a grueling ordeal, floating in the open sea for approximately ten hours while awaiting help. Their long wait finally ended when another passing vessel spotted the cluster of survivors in the water and successfully pulled them aboard to safety.
Emergency rescue teams have since faced severe operational challenges as they continue their mission to locate the 129 missing passengers and crew. Rescue workers have been forced to battle intense winds and hazardous sea conditions that have complicated operations across the vast search zone.
The Virgo Transport 8 had been undertaking a standard 510-kilometer maritime journey from the port of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city located in East Java, to the city of Banjarmasin on the island of Borneo, a voyage that typically takes around 20 hours to complete.
After departing Surabaya on Saturday afternoon, the vessel failed to maintain scheduled communications and was officially reported missing on Sunday morning. Maritime authorities subsequently located the inverted hull resting roughly 80 nautical miles, or nearly 150 kilometers, from its intended destination at the port of Banjarmasin.
Rizky revealed that the journey had been perilous from the beginning, noting that the ferry had been repeatedly tossed and rocked by large, aggressive waves ever since it departed the docks in East Java on Saturday afternoon.
Bearing visible physical injuries and red eyes from the prolonged exposure to seawater and exhaustion, the young waiter spoke of the profound psychological toll the shipwreck had inflicted upon him. Feeling completely overwhelmed, suffocated, and resigned to his fate during the ordeal, Rizky stated firmly that he is thoroughly traumatized and will never return to work at sea again.
