Alaska Teenager Rescued After Days Aboard Capsized Boat in Bering Sea as Two Family Members Perish

A harrowing maritime ordeal in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea came to an end with the rescue of a 15-year-old Alaskan boy, who managed to stay alive atop the hull of a capsized skiff while enduring the devastating loss of two close family members. The teenager was pulled from the ocean after spending nearly three days exposed to the harsh Arctic elements, bringing both immense relief and profound sorrow to his remote home community.

The young survivor, identified as Derek Parker Aghnaanga, was discovered by emergency search teams roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island. He had initially set out on what was intended to be a regular fishing voyage alongside his 35-year-old brother, Sidney Kulowiyi, and their cousin, before their small vessel suddenly overturned and plunged the three mariners into the freezing waters.

When maritime rescuers finally approached the overturned vessel, Aghnaanga was battling severe cold but was able to recount the tragic fate of his companions. Adam White, captain of the commercial fishing vessel Northwest Explorer, described the emotional moment of contact, recalling that the teenager spoke through intensely chattering teeth to inform responders about the whereabouts of his relatives.

According to Captain White, the teenager explained that his older brother was still trapped beneath the overturned hull of the skiff. Aghnaanga also shared the heartbreaking detail that his cousin had been unable to hold on through the freezing darkness, slipping away into the ocean the previous night, just hours before help was able to reach them.

Additional details shared by relatives through an online memorial fundraiser highlighted the teenager's desperate struggle to keep his family close during the catastrophe. Family members noted that Aghnaanga fought bravely to hold onto the bodies of both his brother and cousin after they perished in the freezing sea, refusing to let go until search and recovery teams arrived on the scene.

The initial breakthrough in locating the teenager was achieved by a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew dispatched from Air Station Kodiak. Aerial observers spotted Aghnaanga perched precariously on the exposed bottom of the capsized skiff and immediately initiated emergency protocols, dropping an inflatable survival raft and specialized equipment to assist him.

To direct surface vessels toward the remote location, the Coast Guard flight crew deployed illumination flares over the waters. These visual markers guided the crew of the nearby Northwest Explorer through the surrounding seas directly to the exact coordinates of the capsized craft to commence the physical rescue.

Upon reaching the site, crew members from the Northwest Explorer carefully brought Aghnaanga safely onto their vessel. Once the teenager was secure, the crew undertook the solemn and difficult task of recovering the bodies of both Kulowiyi and the teenager's cousin from the water and the overturned vessel.

Rescuers immediately turned their attention to treating Aghnaanga, who was exhibiting clear symptoms of hypothermia following his prolonged exposure to the freezing Bering Sea climate. The crew wrapped the 15-year-old in warm blankets and applied hot packs to raise his body temperature while the vessel transported him toward medical care in Nome.

The three fishermen had originally set out on Friday from Savoonga, an Alaska Native village located on St. Lawrence Island, with the expectation of returning home early Sunday. When the crew failed to return as scheduled, concerned relatives reported them missing on Sunday night, triggering an immediate and extensive multi-agency emergency search.

The comprehensive search operation mobilized resources across numerous state and federal organizations, including the Coast Guard Arctic District, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, the Alaska Air National Guard's 176th Wing, the Alaska State Troopers, and local emergency authorities in Savoonga.

For the residents of Savoonga, a close-knit community of roughly 800 people, the progress of the rescue effort was monitored with intense emotion. Colleen Walker, an aunt of the brothers, described the immense relief and tears that filled the room as family members listened to radio communications and heard the fishing vessel captain confirm that the young boy had been found alive.

Walker spoke fondly of Kulowiyi, remembering him as a humble commercial fishing captain and a vital provider for the island village. In remote coastal towns like Savoonga, subsistence and commercial halibut fishing serve as essential pillars of community life and sustenance, making the loss of two local mariners an acute tragedy for the entire area.

Kulowiyi leaves behind children, prompting his extended family to create a GoFundMe campaign to provide support for his dependents and assist with related expenses. The fundraiser quickly drew widespread backing from the public, raising more than $42,000 toward a $45,000 goal shortly after the incident was made public.

Regional military and maritime leaders expressed their deep sorrow over the fatal outcome for the two adult fishermen. Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard Arctic District, offered heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and community members impacted by the tragedy while noting the coordinated efforts of all personnel involved in the rescue.

Official inquiries into the maritime incident remain active, as neither the Coast Guard nor the Alaska State Troopers have released findings regarding the specific circumstances that caused the skiff to capsize off the coast of St. Lawrence Island.
